G-Class ZF 8HP Transmission Conversion

The ZF 8HP Transmission Swap Kit enables the integration of a modern 8-speed automatic transmission into Mercedes G-Class platforms originally designed with earlier drivetrain configurations.

Drivetrain Concept

The system combines Mercedes inline diesel engines — OM612, OM613 and OM648 — with the ZF 8HP transmission. This creates a drivetrain that maintains mechanical strength while improving driving behavior across all conditions.

The result is smoother shifting, lower engine speed at highway cruising, improved efficiency and more controlled response both on-road and off-road.

Transmission Options

The system is based on the ZF 8HP Automatic Transmission, available in used, refurbished or new condition depending on project requirements.

For used units, servicing is recommended prior to installation using the Oil and Filter Service Kit and, where required, torque converter inspection or rebuild.

Engine Integration

A dedicated Diesel Engine Adapter connects OM612, OM613 and OM648 engines to the ZF transmission. This ensures correct alignment and load transfer within the drivetrain.

Transfer Case Integration

Because G-Class vehicles use multiple transfer case variants, the system includes a Driveshaft Adapter solution. Configuration depends on the specific vehicle and must be matched correctly.

Thermal Management

An optional Transmission Oil Cooling Kit supports temperature control during sustained load and off-road operation.

Electronic Control

The transmission is operated through a Standalone Control Kit, allowing independent operation in retrofit builds.

Driver control options include:

System Integration

All components are designed to function together as a single drivetrain system rather than separate parts. Each configuration is defined based on vehicle, engine and intended use.

Compatibility

Compatible with Mercedes G-Class platforms W460, W461 and W463. Due to variations in drivetrain and transfer case configurations, compatibility should be confirmed before ordering.
